Special Events

Mackinac's most famous event is the Annual Lilac Festival held every year in early to mid-June. There is always something happening on Mackinac Island, so check out the special events calendar before planning your visit.

Carriage Rentals and Tours

Since motor vehicles are not permitted to intrude on the natural beauty of Mackinac Island, there is no better way to visit this historic isle and see the legendary points of interest than by carriage. Carriage tours are available either by group tours, private tours, or drive yourself carriages.

Biking & Hiking

Mackinac Island is eighty percent State Park land, with 70 miles of roads and trails within the park for biking and hiking.  Bike rentals are available on the Island, or you can bring your own bike. Bike or hike to the park's many geological and historical treasures, or bike the scenic shoreline around the island's 8.3 mile perimeter on M-185, the nation's only state highway without motor vehicle traffic.

Horseback Riding

A favorite past time from a century ago is still a main attraction on the Island. Take a guided tour on horseback, or for the more experienced rider, enjoy the off-the-beaten-path trails. Horseback riding rentals are available by the hour.

Golfing

There are two golf courses on Mackinac Island. The Grand Hotel's challenging 18-hole course, and the historic Wawashkamo Golf Club, which is located on a battlefield from the War of 1812, and is the oldest continuously played facility in Michigan.

Sailing & Charters

Sailboat rides and boat charters are available daily from the Mackinac Harbor.

Cross-Country Skiing

This unique winter wonderland is the perfect winter destination, boasting some of Michigan's finest cross-country skiing. Cross-country skiing season is mid-December through March. Ski rentals are available on the island from the Balsam Shop.  Check out Sunset Condos in the January issue of Traverse Magazine on pages 30 - 36 for more details on cross country skiing on Mackinac Island. Trails are specifically groomed to make the skiing and snowshoeing the best it can be.

Fort Mackinac

Built by the British in 1780 to protect the Great Lakes Fur Trade, Fort Mackinac served as a sentinel in the Straits of Mackinac for 115 years. Today the original restored fort is a National Historic Landmark. Tours are given daily by costumed guides.

Arch Rock

One of the most photographed spots on Mackinac Island, this natural limestone formation rises almost 150 feet above the water of the Straits of Mackinac.

Skull Cave

Skull Cave is one of the many small caves on Mackinac Island. Other small caves are Crack in the Island, Cave in the Woods, Fairy Kitchen, and Devil's Kitchen.

Fort Holmes

Fort Holmes was originally established as Fort George during the last year of the War of 1812. Located at the highest point on Mackinac Island (320 feet above lake level), Fort Holmes offers a panoramic view of Fort Mackinac and the Straits of Mackinac.

Sunset Rock

Sunset Rock on the west end of the island near Stonecliffe offers a spectacular view of Lake Huron and the Mackinac Bridge.

Butterfly Houses

Mackinac is home to two Butterfly Houses. You are welcome to spend as long as you like, surrounded by hundreds of butterflies from all over the world.

Shopping & Fudge

No one can resist spending time on Main Street and Market Street, visiting the numerous specialty stores, looking for that special remembrance of Mackinac Island. Watch the fudge being made through the storefront windows, and taste the many varieties of fudge made fresh each day.
